Farm Bill, Urban Farming, and Food Insecurity
As the recent Farm Bill was headed to Congress, High Point was fortunate to have Congresswoman Manning visit with both the Greater High Point Food Alliance and Growing High Point to discuss our collaborative work within our community as we work to alleviate food insecurity.
During this visit, our Executive Director shared about the impact of the 2023 COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) increase for Social Security recipients on SNAP and how the increase resulted in many of them having their SNAP benefits reduced or losing their SNAP benefits altogether.
They also discussed recommended SNAP policy changes to help grandparents raising their grandchildren without SNAP benefits because they do not have custody of the children.
There was discussion about how the Farm Bill could positively impact urban farming.
Food Drop at Life on Lexington

When Claire Robinson with Life on Lexington Church and High Point LEAP reached out to the Greater High Point Food Alliance, stating that their church had a renewed interest in offering the Food Drop at Life on Lexington, we were excited to meet with her!
At our meeting, we discussed ways to inform the community of the renewed interest and some troubleshooting as they looked to move forward. We made some phone calls and helped to set up a meeting between their leadership and Second Harvest Food Bank.

As a result of these community connections, the Food Drop started at Life on Lexington again on November 7, 2023. From March of 2019 through March of 2024, this food drop has helped to provide over 2,199,614 lbs of food worth $4,245,255 to our community.
Thank you to our community partners for coming together to help our neighbors!
